Age of Wonders III

Age of Wonders III is the game I worked on during my internship (4 months) as a designer. It is developed and currently being expanded by Triumph Studios in Delft, the Netherlands. I am still working at this studio as a summer job for about 2 months.

The game
Age of Wonders III is a turn-based strategy game with an emphasis on tactical battles, set in a fantasy setting. It launched on March 31 2014 and was well-received, with a Metacritic score around 80%. You can find more info about the game itself on www.ageofwonders.com and visit www.triumphstudios.com if you want to know more about the studio.

My work
My internship started about 1,5 month before release, so at first it included a lot of quality assurance, playtesting, balancing and bug hunting.
After the launch however, I got the opportunity to do a lot of design work. This content is not revealed yet, so I can't talk about it in detail, but since Triumph Studios posted this message on their website, I can safely say I am involved with a new class, victory condition and the "new type of quests". On top of that I also designed new units, features and levels.
Next to my design work I had some side-tasks like verifying the French localization, translating a few strings on occasion, and providing customer support through our forums.

So, a short overview:
  • Level Design, scripting & decoration
  • Unit/Skills design & balancing
  • Game features design
  • QA & playtesting
  • French localization
  • Customer support

Conclusion
This was my first time working with LUA and I learned some tips & tricks regarding (level) design, but I feel I mostly gained experience in my "soft skills" through working in a bigger team, with people from different disciplines and with specific tools. I also learned/experienced the importance of communication, organization, planning and customer support.

This page will be updated with more material after I finish my summer job, and as more content gets revealed!
